Colin Torrens, of Lisnagelvin Primary School, has taken to reading bedtime stories to his pupils through a computer App known as ‘Class Dojo’.

Schools across the north west have been making efforts to stay connected with their students during the closures as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. While numerous schools remain open to accommodate the children of key workers, the vast majority of children are currently being taught at home by families, with their teachers providing learning online resources.

With titles such as ‘Whatever Next’ and ‘Peace at Last’ by Jill Murphy, as well as ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ by CS Lewis, Mr Torrens is ensuring that primary school children of all ages are catered for and do not go without a bedtime story.

As the school has remained open for the children of key workers and other vulnerable children, Mr Torrens ‘broadcasts’ from the school premises, allowing pupils to take comfort in the familiar setting.

He also includes positive messages alongside the stories to reassure the children listening - a continuation of the nurturing values that the school is renowned for.

Perhaps Mr Torrens was inspired by Mason Cooley who suggested that: ‘Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.’

And judging by the feedback, these stories have been a huge hit with parents and children alike, and are a welcome addition to the bedtime routine.
