Ulster University Foundation Dean of the School of Medicine Professor Louise Dubras aiming for intake of 70 at Derry medical school in 2021

Professor Louise Dubras, Ulster University’s lead on the medical school at Magee College, says she is looking forward to welcoming the first intake of students next year.

Speaking after the Executive committed to the establishment of a Graduate Entry Medical School (GEMS), she said she was now working towards an influx of 70 students in September 2021. 

Prof. Dubras, who is Foundation Dean of the School of Medicine at Ulster University, said the Derry medical school will help address workforce shortages in the local health system.

“As our health sector so bravely tackles this pandemic, we can be in no doubt of the importance of this essential opportunity to unlock greater capacity for the workforce, as we educate the compassionate and skilled doctors of the future,” she said.

Prof. Dubras is currently working as a GP in the city and contributing shifts in the COVID centre at Altnagelvin.

She said the GEMS will attract graduates to study, work and live in the North West and will be a catalyst in an innovation corridor to be established as part of the City Deal.

“We look forward to taking forward the next steps and to welcoming our first medical students keen to embark upon such a rewarding and vital career path with us,” she said. 

The Medical School will offer a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) medical degree programme that is unique in this country.
