16 ICU beds staffed at Altnagelvin in line with extreme surge plan

The Altnagelvin ICU unit now has sixteen beds staffed in line with its extreme surge planning with nine beds occupied and seven currently free, according to data released by the Department of Health on Wednesday.

Four more people were admitted to Altnagelvin with coronavirus yesterday.

Two men and two women, ranging in age from the over 50s to the over 80s, were admitted yesterday, the Department of Health confirmed on Wednesday.

At midnight on Tuesday 109 people were being treated as coronavirus inpatients across all Western Trust hospitals.

Five of 16 (31.25%) ICU beds at Altnagelvin were being used to treat COVID-19 patients; four (25%) were occupied by patients with other conditions and seven (43.75%) were free.

In terms of general occupancy 20.06% of beds at Altnagelvin were ‘COVID-19 occupied’, 72.86% were ‘other occupied’ and the hospital had 3.54% capacity left in the system: 3.54% were ‘awaiting admission.’

Seven ICU patients in total were being ventilated - three were COVID-19 patients and four were non-COVID-19 patients.
