17 people over 60 have contracted COVID-19 in Derry and Strabane in the past week

Seventeen people in the more vulnerable over 60 age group have tested positive for coronavirus in Derry and Strabane over the past seven days and four of these patients were over 80 years of age.

A further 29 positive coronavirus cases were registered in Derry and Strabane on Thursday, according to the latest Department of Health data that was released this afternoon.

In total there were 242 cases between September 18 and 24 and the rolling seven day case rate locally is now at a very high 160.6 per 100,000.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Derry and Strabane has more than doubled in a fortnight from 314 on Saturday, September 12, to 636 today.

Most of the cases were among the 20 to 39 age demographic with 120 cases in total.

But there were also 72 cases among people aged 40 to 59 and 33 cases among children and teenagers.

Six hundred and thirty six people in the city and district have now tested positive for coronavirus.

Over the past week there have been as many cases of COVID-19 in Derry and Strabane as were reported between the start of the pandemic and August 19.
