25 deaths registered in Derry and Strabane; none COVID-19 related

The Northern Ireland Research and Statistics Agency (NISRA) weekly death registration statistics published this morning show that by Friday, August 21, 730 people had died in the city and district in the year to date. That was up from 705 the week previous.

There were no more reported deaths from SARS-CoV-2 in Derry and Strabane last week with the total death toll from the virus remaining 29 - 3.9 per cent of all deaths in the district this year so far.

Derry and Strabane again had the second fewest number of coronavirus deaths in the north in the calendar year up until August 21 while Fermanagh and Omagh had the fewest number at 17.

Sadly, across the north as a whole, there were six deaths mentioning COVID-19 on the death certificate in week 33, accounting for 1.9% of all deaths in that week and bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths registered in calendar year 2020 to 869.

There have been 10,951 deaths registered in the north in the year-to-date, 29.3% of which (3,207) were classified as ‘respiratory’. The number and proportion of respiratory deaths is slightly higher in the year-to-date than the 5- year average (2,932 29.0%).
