40 in Western Trust hospitals as Derry and Strabane records slight decrease in seven day COVID-19 rate

The seven day COVID-19 case rate per 100,000 people in Derry and Strabane declined from 991.6 to 870.1 between Tuesday and Wednesday - the first drop in the figure for weeks - according to the latest data published by the Department of Health.

However, this is still one of the highest rates of coronavirus in Europe and the figure is still two and a half times greater than the average for the north.

Hospitalisations continued yesterday. A further two people - one aged between 40 and 59 and one aged between 60 and 79 - were admitted to Altnagelvin with the illness on Wednesday and at midnight there were 40 people being treated for COVID-19 in Western Trust hospitals.

In total 3,650 people have now tested positive for the illness in Derry and Strabane since the pandemic began.

There was a slight decline in the seven day case rate.

Between October 8 and October 14, 1,311 people tested positive in the Derry and Strabane area which was down on the 1,494 cases recorded in the seven days October 7 to October 13.

The daily change in the cumulative number of patients with a positive test in Derry and Strabane between October 13 and October 14 was 104.
