Altnagelvin 2.11% over capacity with 123 COVID-19 patients in Trust hospitals

Two more people - a man and a woman aged in their 70s - were admitted to Altnagelvin with COVID-19 yesterday with 123 people in Western Trust hospitals with the illness at midnight last night.

The number of people being treated as COVID-19 inpatients in Derry and Enniskillen is now higher than it was during the second wave of the pandemic in October and November and much higher than it was last April.

Altnagelvin is currently 2.11 per cent over capacity, according to the Department of Health daily update.

Eight of twelve (66.67%) ICU beds at Altnagelvin are being used to treat COVID-19 patients; four (33.33%) are occupied by patients with other conditions. None are free although the 'Journal' understands 13 ICU beds are currently staffed and this can be increased to 16 to meet the demands of the ongoing surge.

Four ICU patients in total are being ventilated - one is a COVID-19 patient and three are non-COVID-19 patients.

In terms of general occupancy 20.18 per cent of beds at Altnagelvin are 'COVID-19 occupied', 73.80 per cent are 'other occupied' and the hospital is 2.11 per cent over capacity: 6.02 per cent are 'awaiting admission' according to the latest data.

No further deaths have been reported locally. A hundred and six people have died in Derry and Strabane since the pandemic began.
