Bid to turn Derry mews lanes into public recreational spaces to deter flytipping

A Derry community group is to engage with residents of the Strand and Racecourse Road to work on proposals to turn back lanes into recreational utilities.

The plan is to develop the lanes for positive purposes to reduce the problem of fly tipping which has been a plague for years.

Sinn Féin councillor Mickey Cooper has been working to secure funding for such a scheme and has written to residents seeking their engagement.

He said: “I am delighted to confirm that GDI have been recommended for support through council’s community planning process which will enable them to develop the mews lanes in your area to return them to a condition that residents can be proud of and not somewhere they want to avoid. In the coming weeks the mews lanes in Lower Racecourse Road and Lower Strand will be given a deep clean after which the GDI will be engaging with residents to develop proposals for the lanes to be used by themselves for recreational purposes and to further discourage fly tipping in future.

“GDI will inform you closer to the time of the dates for the deep clean in your particular area.”
