Coronavirus NI: Major spike in deaths as 13 people die in NI hospitals in 24 hours

The Department of Health (DoH) has recorded a significant spike in the number of Covid-19 related deaths in the last 24 hours.

In total, 13 patients who tested positive for Covid-19 died in hospitals across Northern Ireland between 10.00am on Monday and 10.00am on Tuesday.

The 13 additional deaths represent the highest daily increase in deaths recorded in Northern Ireland in months.

The DoH Covid-19 deathtoll now stands at 671.

The DoH also reported an additional 722 infections - this is the fourth consecutive day to see fewer than 1,000 deaths recorded.

The total number of people to test positive since the beginning of the pandemic now stands at 35,554.

There was also an improvement on the number of unoccupied intensive care unit beds - there were nine unoccupied beds on Monday but now there are 14.

However, there are 18 more people in hospital with Covid-19 than there were 24 hours ago when the number of inpatients stood at 342.
