Derry-based academic Dr. Magda Bucholc has said a rise in COVID-19 cases over the weekend suggests a second wave of the illness could be on the way.

Dr. Bucholc, a lecturer at the School of Computing, Engineering and Intelligence Systems at Magee College, said 'generic lockdowns' were not an appropriate response to the recent rise in infections.

The Ulster University expert helped develop the Northern Ireland COVID-19 tracker that has been live since April.

After a rise in cases at the weekend, Dr. Bucholc tweeted: "NI reported 120 new #COVID19 cases yesterday, the highest increase since early May. Ireland only 60 cases.

"Looks like a second wave is on the way. We should be a lot more targeted in the approach, applying generic lockdowns isn’t the answer. https://nicovidtracker.org."

There has been a noticeable increase in reported COVID-19 cases in Derry and Strabane over the past week with an increase of 31 cases in the district rose by 31 from Sunday to Sunday.
