Doyle says troops move ‘inappropriate’ in areas

Aontú Councillor Emmet Doyle has criticised the decision by the Minister of Health to seek assistance from the British Ministry of Defence in hospitals saying it was not appropriate in areas where residents would feel angered.

He said: “The British Army will not been viewed by many of the people I represent as being concerned with medical care, and it would be more appropriate for the Department of Health to commission the services of other trained medics such as the Knights of Malta or St John’s Ambulance who have the full support of the community.”

People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin said: “There would be no need for the divisive discussion of mobilising troops into the health service if the Executive fully requisitioned private care hospitals into the health service. An immediate pay increase for health workers would bolster staff morale and attract new recruits. The Executive should urgently consider implementing a Zero-Covid strategy.”
