East Derry MP Gregory Campbell calls for modernisation of ‘monolith that is the NHS’
Gregory Campbell has called for money to be better spent on the health service and for what he described as the ‘monolith that is the National Health Service’ to be modernised.
The DUP MP said he believed the NHS was a ‘fantastic organisation’ but he also said that money needed to be better spent on the service.
Mr. Campbell made the comments during a Westminster Hall debate on a motion on NHS capital spending by the Liberal Democrat MP Bobby Deans.
Mr. Deans, a south London Lib Dem MP, suggested that with better procurement, contract management and risk allocation on major capital projects it would be possible to ‘massively accelerate the delivery of infrastructure in our country in a way that delivers real value for money for the taxpayer’.

The East Derry MP remarked: “To summarise what he is saying, we need to better spend the money that is currently being deployed in the NHS. Does he agree that this has to be the underpinning feature going forward?
"More and more money has been poured into the NHS; we all think it is a fantastic organisation and praise those who work in it, but we need to spend that money better and modernise the monolith that is the NHS.”
Mr. Deans agreed with Mr. Campbell stating: “We can continue to pour money into the operational side of the NHS, but if we do not get the capital expenditure right and improve the equipment, systems and buildings, we will always be pouring good money after bad.”
