Five COVID-19 deaths over the weekend brings Derry and Strabane toll to 39

Five more people have sadly died with COVID-19 since Friday bringing the total number of deaths in the district to 39.

Two men aged over 80 were registered to have died on Friday.

A woman aged between 60 and 79 and a man aged between 40 and 59 died on Saturday. And a woman aged over 80 died on Sunday.

According to the latest data published by the Department of Health on Monday thirteen more people were admitted to Altnagelvin with coronavirus between Friday and Sunday.

At midnight on Sunday there were 69 confirmed COVID-19 patients in hospitals across the Western Trust.

The latest daily COVID-19 dashboard data show that seven of nine ICU beds at Altnagelvin (77.78 per cent) were occupied with COVID-19 patients. Two further ICU beds were being used for patients with non-COVID issues.

There were no unoccupied ICU beds in the hospital, according to the DoH, although the Director of Acute Services at the Western Trust Geraldine McKay recently told the 'Journal' there was a maximum capacity of 18 ICU beds at Altnagelvin and six to ten in Enniskillen depending on the level of surge.

Two of the COVID-19 patients are being ventilated as are the two non-COVID patients.

A breakdown of general occupancy shows Altnagelvin is now 19.50 per cent 'COVID-19 occupied', 69.50 per cent 'other occupied' with 11 per cent capacity still available in the system.
