More COVID-19 cases in Derry and Strabane last week than between start of pandemic and late June

Forty-nine new cases of COVID-19 were registered in Derry and Strabane on Tuesday as the illness continues to surge in the city and district.

Over the past seven days there have been 184 positive tests and the rolling seven day case rate per 100,000 people has risen to a high of 122.1

There were thus more positive coronavirus tests (184) in Derry and Strabane between September 16 and September 22 than there were between the start of the pandemic and June 24 (177), to put the recent spike into perspective.

Most of those who returned positive laboratory tests over the past week were in the younger age categories: 0-19 (27), 20-39 (93) and 40-59 (54).

However, nine of those who tested positive were in the more vulnerable 60-79 age group while one was over 80 years of age.

There have no new hospitalisations in Altnagelvin after a patient aged between 60 and 79 was admitted to the hospital on Sunday.
