New free drug, alcohol and mental health programme being offered by HURT in Derry

A drug, alcohol and mental health awareness programme for 13 to 24-year-olds is being offered free of charge by local charity HURT in Derry.

The Love The Life You Live programme is funded by Derry & Strabane District Council through the Peace IV Programme.

The programme will start on September 19 and will run on Saturdays from 11.30 am to 2.30pm and Wednesday evenings from 6pm to 9pm.

There are two options for attendance: either via Zoom or in person at Destined Learning Centre Foyle Road. Covid guidelines apply with limited places available at the physical venue.

Topics addressed will include: Drug Alcohol & Mental Health Awareness; Equality & Diversity and Save a Mate: CPR and use of an AED (Defibrillator); Helping a choking casualty; Helping someone who may be having a heart attack; Helping someone who is having an asthma attack; Managing panic attacks; Dealing with bleeding and Managing burns and scalds.

Other topics include recognising and responding to the signs and symptoms of poisoning, including drug and alcohol poisoning and smoke and gas inhalation.

There will also be advice, guidance and training delivered on dealing with head injuries and fractures and suicide prevention.

The course also includes practical knowledge and skills to keep someone safe in the event of a mental health crisis.
