Rare disease lobby to meet Derry Mayor

The Derry branch of a lobby group that supports people living with rare diseases is due to meet the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Michaela Boyle, to discuss their work.

The Foyle and North West Forum of the Northern Ireland (NI) Rare Disease Partnership is scheduled to meet the Mayor in the Guildhall on March 2.

The group meets quarterly in local venues to help connect those living with rare diseases and their families

Its purpose is to provide support and information about the work of NIRDP in order to “promote the aim that no one should be disadvantaged by the rarity of their condition”.

Prior to meeting the Mayor in early March, local members of the NIRDP will travel to Belfast to take part in a North South Rare Disease Day Conference on February 28.

The event will take place in the Queen’s University of Belfast, Riddel Hall, in Stranmillis next Friday.

The organisers say the conference will provide an opportunity to “support a united voice for Rare Diseases”.

It will also allow patients, clinicians, carers, patients, volunteers, researchers and students to “learn about policy developments and get involved in future policy developments and get involved in future policy formation” and to “network with patients, family or parent carers, clinicians and policy makers”.

Tickets for the conference must be booked and are available at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/joint-north-south-rare-disease-day-conference-tickets-90128668273
