Rats running rampant round riverside homes in Derry

Residents have raised serious concerns about rats running rampant in a riverside estate.

Rodents have been visible in and around Coshowen and Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue confirmed a multi-agency approach is to be implemented to deal with the problem, which she has described as a serious public health issue.

Colr. Logue said: “I received a number of calls from residents of Coshowen regarding rodent activity in their development. The problem is becoming unbearable as rats are running around during the day on the ground, which is never a good sign, and on top of fences.

“I know there are limited measures which can be carried out at this time due to the pandemic , however I suggested a number measures that could be carried out , one being a survey of the condition and the use of bins and a letter and advice leaflet going to all residents. Also, looking at food waste in around the areas fenced off for bins and other contributing factors.”

She said NI Water confirmed they will be inspecting the sewers and the Councils Environment Health Department have delivered leaflets. She has also informed the Housing Executive.

“As we know from other areas affected by rodent issues this isn’t easily solved and there could be a bit of time involved here. I would also appeal to anyone using the walkway out ‘the line’ not to throw away any food waste in the area and take their rubbish home with them.”
