Colr. Duffy was speaking after an emergency meeting she proposed was convened by the Mayor to discuss whether to go ahead with the celebrations next week in light of the global coronavirus health crisis.

The meeting came as it emerged four more cases of COVID19 were confirmed in Northern Ireland, bringing the total number across Ireland to 40.

The decision to cancel the parades in Derry and a second in Strabane were backed by all those in attendance at the meeting in the Guildhall.

Commenting on the decision, Colr Duffy said: “I believe that today’s unanimous decision by Council Leaders to cancel this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parades is the correct and logical one in the face of the threat to health from the spread of the Covid19 virus.

“Decisions like this are never easy but in all circumstances, the health and welfare of citizens and council workers must be paramount.

“St Patrick’s Day celebrations in the City are always a source of great enjoyment with a high level of community participation in the carnival atmosphere created by the floats and groups who take part.

“I have no doubt the cancellation will be a big disappointment to many, not least the business community, but I am confident that they will appreciate the public health issues that the council must base its decision on, particularly in such a rapidly changing situation .”
