Strathfoyle Greenway inclusion in Department draft budget welcomed

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed a commitment of investment to the Strathfoyle Greenway in the Department for Communities latest draft budget.

The Foyle MLA said the greenway will be completely transformational for Derry and its surrounding areas, and was a project the community have worked tirelessly to secure and progress in recent years despite facing many challenges along the way.

“While the journey is not yet over, this cash boost and commitment will be a great help in the progression of this vital local amenity,” he said.

“In September 2020, the Infrastructure Minister announced a £1.28 million investment representing 50% of the projected capital. I subsequently called upon Derry City and Strabane District Council to work alongside DAERA and the Department for Communities to secure the remaining funding . Developing active travel routes such as this one prioritises pedestrians and cyclists, encourages the uptake in active travel and will bring a multitude of benefits for the environment and people’s overall health.

“In keeping a continued focus on green infrastructure, we can create greener, more sustainable societies while tackling the climate emergency head on.

“There is work yet to be done but this investment from the Department for Communities will see this vital project one step closer to fruition.”
