Who are you really, deep down?

Can you even remember who that natural true self is, or used to be?

Before we attached labels to ourselves or before we had to conform to how others think we should be?

I do a lot of reading. I love self study and finding out more about who I am and what my potential is and as a mentor I love doing the same for those who I work with.

I have been re-reading the book again psycho-cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. It is a fantastic book and a deep insight into self image, and how that self image controls so much of our behaviours and results in life.

I read over the chapter again recently on 'How to unlock your real personality'. So much of that chapter resonated with me but it also resonated with so much of how I used to be.

So much of who we are today is in fact not our true nature or our own personality. We create different types of personalities for different situations a lot of times. We're afraid to be our own true self most of the time because of what people might think of us, being ourselves.

“Personality, that magnetic mysterious something that is easy to recognise, but difficult to define." - Maxwell Maltz.

Can you remember the last time that you were honestly just being yourself?

Not having to be really self aware in public, or having to really think about what you are saying and to who?

Just showing up being who you really want to be, and not how others think you should be?

Obviously being self conscious and self aware is a good thing, but it can also hold us back a lot.

Excessive carefulness can lead to inhibition and anxiety and will prevent you from moving forward when you should. So what if you cared a little less, how would that feel?

If you cared a little less about how others perceived you, would that help you progress further, faster, or have you feeling like your true self more often?

“I don’t like these cold precise perfect people, who in order not to speak wrong, never speak at all and in order not to do wrong, never do anything at all." - Henry Ward Beecher

When we become overly conscious of what other people think of us we put a jammer in the process of showing up and letting others sense your real personality.

Being overly concerned if I am saying the right words or standing the right way, behaving accordingly in social situations can leave you feeling frustrated, up tight and looking for a quick exit so you can go home relax and be yourself. I am sure we have all felt this, I know that I have.

“The way to make a good impression on people is never try to consciously make a good impression on them.“ - Maxwell Maltz.

People naturally know when someone is being themselves and when someone is trying so hard to be something else.

We pick up other people's energy more than words if we are tuned into it. That energy can be easily sensed and will say more to others about how you are feeling than the words coming out of our mouths.

So next time you have something planned, maybe a meeting or a social gathering or an important opportunity, will you show up as you?

Of course it is important to be socially aware and conscious but it is also really important to bring out your true nature and your own personality and to be yourself more often.

People will feel it and be attracted to the real version of who you are!
