Urgent need to improve early diagnosis and treatment for lobular breast cancer - Derry MLA
Sinn Féin MLA Ciara Ferguson has expressed her support for the Lobular Moon Shot Project, which is working to improve the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of lobular breast cancer.
Marking the first anniversary of the passing of Dr Susan Michaelis, the Foyle MLA paid tribute to her courage and tireless campaigning, which raised global awareness of lobular breast cancer and brought hope to women and families.
The campaign states that: “Lobular breast cancer frequently fails to be detected on a mammogram or by ultra sound. It has no specific treatment based on its unique biology and remains an 'unmet clinical need'. This is due to a lack of investment for further research into the basic biology of the disease."
Ciara Ferguson said: “Despite being the second most common form of breast cancer, lobular breast cancer remains significantly under-researched. There is an urgent need to improve early diagnosis, develop targeted treatments, and ensure women receive the care and support they deserve.

“The Lobular Moon shot Project represents a vital opportunity to improve outcomes for women, and I welcome the growing cross-party support for this important work.
“Investment in this work is crucial to advancing understanding of lobular breast cancer and improving survival rates. We extend our solidarity to Susan’s family and to everyone continuing her campaign, and Sinn Féin will continue to support efforts to secure the resources needed to advance this life-saving work.”
The Lobular Moon Shot Project was set up in 2023 to get Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer the research funding needed, so the biology of the disease can be much better understood.
