‘We need to look out for the vulnerable’

Interim Mental Health Champion, Professor Siobhan O’Neill has encouraged us all to care for our mental health every single day.

Speaking on World Mental Health day on Saturday Prof. O’Neill highlighted the need to remain hopeful during the current Covid challenges and the difficulties facing the economy.

She is calling on everyone to be a mental health champion for themselves, and support others around them during this difficult time.

“We are without doubt going through tough times. The need to watch out for others who might be vulnerable and help them get support has never been more important, and with Covid restrictions ongoing, and the economy being hit across so many areas, the importance of caring for everyone’s mental health and wellbeing is paramount.

“As the new Mental Health Champion, I am already involved in key discussions and planning to ensure we are able to help people who are suffering as a result of mental health.

“I am working to understand the experience of people with lived experience of mental health, their families and carers, and communities impacted by mental health inequalities, and to be a voice for those otherwise voiceless. They are central to my work and will provide a critical voice for me to challenge decisions where mental wellbeing, suicide prevention and recovery are not considered, and where such consideration would be beneficial for society as a whole.”

The Lifeline helpline is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Anyone of any age living in the North can call for free on 0808 808 8000 if they are experiencing distress or despair.
