WHSCT COVID-19 inpatient total falls to lowest level since December 10

The number of coronavirus patients being treated in Western Trust hospitals at midnight on Wednesday was as low as it has been since December 10.

There were no more reported admissions at Altnagelvin yesterday though a man in his 70s was admitted to the South West Acute Hospital.

At midnight on Wednesday 71 patients were being treated as COVID-19 inpatients across all Western Trust hospitals. The last time it was lower was on December 10 (70).

Five of 16 (31.25%) ICU beds at Altnagelvin were being used to treat COVID-19 patients; three (18.75%) were occupied by patients with other conditions and eight (50%) were free, according to Department of Health figures released this afternoon.

Five ICU patients in total were being ventilated - four were COVID-19 patients and one was a non-COVID-19 patient.

In terms of general occupancy 14.63% of beds at Altnagelvin were ‘COVID-19 occupied’, 78.05% were ‘other occupied’ and there was 1.83% capacity left in the hospital system: 5.49% were ‘awaiting admission.’

No more deaths from the illness were reported this afternoon. In total 126 people have died in Derry/Strabane since the pandemic began.
