Woman, aged 20-39, admitted to Altnagelvin as total WHSCT COVID-19 patient number falls to lowest point since October 15

A woman aged 20 to 39 was admitted to Altnagelvin with coronavirus yesterday although the number of COVID-19 patients in Western Trust hospitals has not been lower since October 15.

At midnight on Thursday 69 patients were being treated as COVID-19 inpatients across all Western Trust hospitals. The last time it was lower was on October 15 (64).

The woman's admission to Altnagelvin yesterday was the first since Tuesday.

Five of 16 (31.25%) ICU beds at Altnagelvin were being used to treat COVID-19 patients; three (18.75%) were occupied by patients with other conditions and eight (50%) were free, according to Department of Health figures released this afternoon.

Five ICU patients in total were being ventilated - four were COVID-19 patients and one was a non-COVID-19 patient.

In terms of general occupancy 12.80% of beds at Altnagelvin were ‘COVID-19 occupied’, 80.49% were ‘other occupied’ and there was 1.83% capacity left in the hospital system: 4.88% were ‘awaiting admission.’

No more deaths from the illness were reported this afternoon. In total 126 people have died in Derry/Strabane since the pandemic began.
