Joe gets the lowdown on Craigavon Bridge and new Transport Hub

Joe Mahon has returned to Derry to get the story behind some of Derry’s most impressive pieces of infrastructure including the Craigavon Bridge and the newly revamped Victorian station.

Joe’s popular series, Ulster Giants, will also feature other landmarks in North West tin the upcoming episode when it airs on UTV on Monday December 14.

Ulster Giants celebrates civil engineering heritage across the north, and in this episode Joe Mahon relates the story of the origins of the Ordnance Survey, when an eight-mile baseline was measured across the shore lands of Lough Foyle to begin the triangulation for the first large scale mapping of Ireland in the 1820s

. This was the first exercise of its kind to be carried out anywhere in the world.

According to the programme, “the accuracy achieved by Thomas Colby and his team of surveyors, using ingeniously contrived, but essentially crude instruments by today’s standards, is still a truly remarkable feat.”

Later in the episode, Joe Mahon travels back from the cityside over to the Waterside Railway Station in Derry for a quick history lesson on the city’s travel infrastructure.

he will also discover how the listed Victorian building has been carefully refurbished and incorporated into the North West’s brand new £27m Transport Hub.

Last month, Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon welcomed the completion of works at the Hub in Derry during a visit to the city.
