Retro: McGonagles walk from Mizen Head for a worthy cause - from the 1988 Derry Journal archive

The public are aware, from media exposure, of the journey made by Patsy McGonagle, O’Gara Villas, Moville, and his two sons, Michael and Jonathan, with their pony and trap in aid of Concern, the organisation that works on behalf of famine victims throughout the world.

The journey from Mizen Head in Cork, to Malin Head, took 28 days.

With detours taken to visit some of the bigger towns, a distance of 750 miles was travelled. It might be assumed that with a good pony and trap the McGonagles had an easy ride.

The fact is, they walked the entire distance. A wonderful example of sacrifice for a worthy cause. Factors beyond their control contributed to their arrival in Carndonagh on Sunday being somewhat muted.

Patsy McGonagle is a brother of Mrs. Brett, of Magheramore, Carndonagh.
