Anderson MLA to seek funding package for Galliagh community

A community funding package should be extended to the Galliagh area of Derry to help avoid a repeat of the violence visited of residents there last week, Sinn Féin MLA Martina Anderson has said.

The Foyle MLA said: “The people of Galliagh should not have had to suffer from the violent incidents and anti-community activity that took place last week.

“Other areas of the city have been able to take advantage of Urban Villages and Communities in Transition funding which has built the ability of community groups to respond to need, provide vital services and opportunities for young people.

“This has enabled communities to sustainably and responsibly tackle anti-community behaviour so we need these vital funding programmes to be extended to Galliagh.

“Galliagh is a beautiful place, it has strong and supportive neighbours both young and old and there are already outstanding community organisations working around the clock to building a better community.”

Ms Anderson said these funds would provide a renewed opportunity to create the space for dialogue, for progression and for inclusion. “As a member of the Executive Office Committee I will pursue the possibility of extending these vital funds to the Galliagh area and encourage the Executive Office to work in close partnership with community organisations so we can deliver for the residents of Galliagh,” she said.

Ms. Anderson was speaking after a night of violence last Friday saw youths from across the city descend on the area and torch vehicles, attack a delivery van and the local shop, which was forced to close. The youths were also witnessed throwing petrol on roads and setting it alight.

Local residents and community activists on the ground have been praised for their united response, which helped prevent further disturbances in the area.

A new community centre is currently under construction for the area, but concerns have been raised for some time about the lack of facilities and dedicated funding for what is one of the largest estates in the city.
