The evergreen Mazda MX-5 continues to dominate roadster sales with the current fourth generation model accounting for over 24,000 UK sales since its launch in 2015. The ten-model range provides a choice of two engines, a 1.5 litre unit or a 2.0 litre unit. Review choice is the 2.0 litre model, the sole engine choice in the top Homura specification of the three grades on offer. This revised Skyactiv-G petrol engine sees an increase in maximum engine speed from 6,800rpm to 7,500rpm while horsepower is up from 160PS to 184PS. Torque also makes a modest gain and a re-tuned exhaust system provides a cleaner, more powerful engine note. The end result is a 0-62mph time of 6.5 seconds with a potential top speed of 136mph.

On road, and the short-throw 6-speed manual gearbox confirms the sporting aspirations of the car, while the introduction of electric power steering sharpens its handling precision. The agility of the car is aided by its weight saving construction with design work during its development paring weight wherever possible to make it the lightest model since the original roadster. Precision is the key word in its performance, highlighting the attention to detail that has endeared so many owners to the model lineage over the years.

For the driver, the steering column now has full tilt and rake adjustment, and the sporting emphasis continues with the rev counter the dominant instrument centrally mounted in front of the driver with the speedometer offset to one side. There is also a maturity in the latest car with an improved cabin ambience thanks to the retuned exhaust, insulated hood and greatly reduced road noise, particularly from the rear end.

Infotainment controls are duplicated on the central console in addition to the touch operation on the 7-inch colour display. Audio provision features a Bose sound system and the infotainment connectivity system works with internet-enabled iPhone and Android smartphones to access a variety of free mobile content.

Storage is also improved on the fourth generation model as the 150 litre boot is now able to swallow two aircraft cabin sized cases. Hood operation is made easier with less effort required to fold back into a lockable position in the storage bin.

With regards to safety, the car's deployable bonnet was particularly praised in the EuroNCAP tests for its potential to lessen pedestrian injuries in an accident. In addition to a full suite of ADAS safety technologies, side airbags feature a special bracket on the outside shoulder of the seats to protect occupants' heads even with the top down.
