Suzuki e Vitara - Derry Motoring with Jim Mc Cauley

Suzuki has extended its presence in the compact SUV market with its first all-electric vehicle. The e Vitara increases choice alongside its hybrid namesake to give customers a BEV option.

Suzuki has developed the new model in-house and uses BYD’s lithium iron-phosphate blade batteries. The model features a lightweight structure, high voltage protection and a spacious interior, thanks to the long wheelbase stretched to the maximum with short overhangs either end.

The e Vitara is available in two drive versions, front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, powered by either a 49kWh or 61kWh battery.

Review model is the front-wheel drive option in higher ‘Ultra’ specification. This features the 61kWh battery which takes output to 174HP, compared to the 144HP of the range opening ‘Motion’ specification. This offers a 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 93mph.

On road, and throttle response if smooth, allowing for easy control and management of the rated 193Nm torque. Suspension is biased towards comfort with good road insulation. Light steering aids manoeuvring at low speeds, but while the heavy rear ‘C’ pillar restricts over the shoulder viewing, parking sensors with reversing camera, and 360 degree all round viewing on this higher spec model more than compensates.

As is now common practice, there are three drive modes, defaulting to Normal. Eco extends cruising range by regulating throttle response as well as aircon power consumption. Sport increases accelerator response for a more committed driving experience. There is also a Snow setting.

For the driver, there is a neatly laid out cabin with twin screens of just over 10 inches each for standard driver information and infotainment. These are set in a one-piece panel running across the upper end of the dash housing. Manual controls are retained underneath for aircon, heated screens and radio volume.

For the passengers, the overall square lines of the vehicle’s design give a roomy cabin with the advantage of a reclining and sliding rear seat unit. This can be moved to balance rear leg room with boot space which can go from 238 litres to 306 litres. Wide rear doors also benefit access for parents dealing with child seats. While the standard upholstery colour is overall dark, certain exterior paint colours come with the option of a two-tone tan fabric / synthetic leather interior which does so much to elevate the overall quality feel. This higher specification also provides power adjustment and heating on the front seats as well as a heated steering wheel.

Specification levels are high from the range opening model and are a significant plus for the new vehicle in an ultra-competitive market sector.

With regards to running requirements, all models feature a heat pump for ultimate battery range given as a combined 264 miles. Overnight home charging will take the battery from 10% to 100% in nine hours with 10% to 80% on rapid DC charging taking 45 minutes.

The model reviewed is in Group 23A for insurance and is priced around £30,000 depending on colour options, and €40,495 in Southern Ireland. The standard 3-year warranty can be extended to 10 years subject to annual approved servicing and an Ohme home charger is fitted ahead of vehicle delivery. Competitive finance deals are available in both markets.
