Get active with Council’s Health and Fitness At Home programme

While gyms workouts are not possible during the current restrictions, Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Leisure Services department are bringing activities to your living room with an action packed programme to get you moving and fit this winter.

The Health and Fitness At Home programme will take you through live classes on Facebook and Youtube including home workouts, mobility exercises, mindfulness sessions, restorative yoga and activities for both children and older people.

A schedule of guest speaker seminars is also being developed focusing on topics such as mental health and wellbeing, injury prevention, foam rolling and flexibility, mental health and nutrition.

The schedule of activities has been split across the week with Motivation Monday, Wellness Wednesday and a Friday Fitness Challenge.

Leisure Quality Assurance Officer at Derry City and Strabane District Council, Rachel McCay, said the programme was a convenient and accessible way to get active and healthy in the winter months.

“We are delighted to be able to offer this free programme to the Derry and Strabane public which has been developed for people of all fitness levels to get involved in,” she said.

“January is traditionally a time when people decide to embark on a healthier and fitter lifestyle ahead of the spring and summer so we felt it was important to offer an alternative for people who can’t access our leisure facilities during the current restrictions.

“With many of us juggling the challenges of remote working and home schooling during the week this is an ideal opportunity for families to take a half hour break away from the desk to take part in some physical activity and reap the physical and mental health benefits it can bring.”

The classes are broadcast live simultaneously on Council’s Leisure Centre Facebook pages and Council’s Youtube channel and can be taken live or watched back at a time that suits people.

Other classes in the programme include trainers top tips, member only classes amd members motivational stories.

The initiative is also tying in with World Health Organisation and Public Health Agency on topics such as be active, healthy at home and health and wellbeing.
