During the first two phases of the scheme, Council delivered more than 25,000 bins to households across the Derry City area.

Delivery of the third and final phase, which will see all remaining households in the city receiving a bin, has begun as a result of funding secured from the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs’ Kerbside Recycling Transformation Programme.

The bins allow people to dispose of all of their green waste, which can include leaves, grass, weeds, dead plants, cold ashes, twigs, small branches and flowers.

Materials such as rubble, plant pots and plastic food packaging are not suitable for disposal in the bins.

The brown bins will be collected on a fortnightly basis along with either the household’s blue or black bin, depending on the area and literature will be supplied with the bin’s delivery detailing all important information.

Mayor Brian Tierney, said the scheme to date has proven extremely successful. “Ever since the first garden waste bins were rolled out as part of the pilot phase of this scheme we have received great feedback from the public and have seen thousands of households getting real use out of this service. Not only is it convenient and easy for the public, but it also has a real benefit in terms of the environment, in reducing the amount of waste we are sending to landfill, and in producing compost which we can recycle back into other areas of our Council services.”

He continued: “I would like to thank those households who are waiting for their bin for their patience, and I’m delighted that we are now able to roll out a further 7,000 bins to local homes. My thanks also to the waste services team who continue to work hard on the delivery of this third phase.”

The third and final roll out is expected to be completed by mid October. A full list of collection dates following the roll out is available at www.derrystrabane.com/greenwaste
