However the festival will still be going ahead, albeit in a different format given the pandemic restrictions, with organisers stating that the health and safety of people is “at the heart of all our decision making as always.”

The annual August festival’s events programme has grown over recent years and last year saw thousands of people take part in the festival parade and thousands more spectators lining the route.

In a statement issued via Foyle Pride’s Facebook page, the group confirmed: “Due to ongoing concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic Foyle Pride regrets that this year’s physical parade and week of events will not take place as planned. The health, safety and well being of all our supporters is at the heart of all our decision making as always .

“This year marks 27 years of Foyle Pride and it has been with the hard work and dedication of many passionate individuals over the years we have seen it grow and grow to what it is today, the year that marks the 10th anniversary of the official Foyle Pride parade.

“We have been working hard and we are determined to celebrate this year in style with an exciting, comprehensive online presence. We encourage you all to get involved and look forward to your continuing support.”

Foyle Pride have said that details of all events will be posted online in the coming weeks, alongside the annual printed programme.

“We look forward to being back on the streets in August 2021 when we determine to oversee the biggest and best Pride parade and party to date,” they stated.

Meanwhile Mayor of Derry & Strabane Brian Tierney last week met with representatives of the Foyle Pride Committee to discuss plans for the festival.
