Halloween weekend in Derry : Your guide to what’s on and how to see it

While we might not be able to gather together to watch the parades and fireworks this weekend, Hallowe’en is far from cancelled with a vast array of events moving online to keep everyone safe.

Meanwhile local landmarks in the city, along with shopping centres and businesses, have been keeping the festival alive with monster inflatables and stunning spooktacular displays entrancing shoppers of all ages.

Online there’s free workshops, new horror films, podcasts, gruesome stories and visual spectacles all being unleashed, so below is a list of what’s happening.

7.45PM Derry Halloween 2019 Behind the Walls - Jamie Baker During Derry Hallowe’en 2019, Ulster University Cinematic Arts Student, Jamie Baker completed a placement with North-West Carnival Initiative and produced a short film on the Halloween Carnival Parade

8.00PM The Morrigan’s Love The Ancient Book of Awakenings stirs… conjuring the most formidable of Ancient Celtic Legends… The Goddess Morrígan. and her sorrowful tale of rejection at the hands of Cú Chullain. (Ages 11 +)

8.30PM Samhain Sessions Cora Harkin - Derry singer’s spine-tingling performance of The Cranberries, hit song Zombie. The 12 year old singer/songwriter was a finalist in Song Academy UK Young Singer/songwriter 2020 and was a finalist in Junior Eurovision Ireland.

9PM Saimhain Sessions Tebi Rex - Irish band Tebi Rex have emerged from the country’s acclaimed hip-hop scene to create a stir not only at home but in the US and UK via their high energy live show, radio friendly singles.

9.30PM Derry Hallowe’en and After Dark Horror Shorts presents... Fright Night - Three dhort original horrors made locally by UU Magee Cinematic Arts students. (Suitable for adults only). The films are- John; Never Coming Back; Last Light.

4.30PM Sayonara - Japanese Oisin went to Tir Na Nog by Derry Hallowe’en and Stories From Afar. The story of Urashima Taro - narrated in the Irish language with English subtitles about a fisher boy went to the Land of Youth and spent three years there. He returned to his home village only to find several hundred years had passed... this legend, which astonishingly resembles the Celtic myth “Oisín in Tír na nÓg”, had been recorded as an “historical incident” in 8th century in Japan.

6pm Awakened Spirits of the Walls .. And Beyond: Commuter... A barristers routine walk home from court takes and unexpected turn.

Every step along the walls leads him further away from reality.

6.30pm Awakened Spirits of the Walls .. And Beyond: Understudy... An introverted loner walks to the theatre on a cold, autumn night. Before the play starts he blacks out...

7pm Sollus presents Haunted Highlanders- Get ready for a Highland Fling with a Hallowe’en twist as talented young dancers perform to the poetry of Robert Burns’ epic Tam o’ Shanter.

7.15pm Awakening our Communities Showcase. The NW Carnival Initiative – the team behind the annual parade – will be working with local people across Derry and Strabane to keep the spirit of Hallowe’en alive.

8pm The Dance of Life and Death- An event with Derry Hallowe’en and The Awakening.

8.30pm Samhain Sessions Foyle College - Foyle College A-Level students will present and showcase two performances.

8.45pm Samhain Sessions - St Cecilia’s College - Pupils are performing Radiohead’s classic hit Creep.

9pm Samhain Sessions - Roisin O and John Broe Widely regarded as one of Ireland’s finest vocalists, it has been Róisín O’s most recent releases that have finally caught the eye of the Irish public.

9.30pm Resident Evil 1844 - Did Cecil Frances Alexander invent Zombies? The hymn writer also composed ‘Stumpie’s Brae’ which tells of sinister, supernatural goings on. Dr Frank Ferguson discuss the background.
