Last week Councillor Duffy proposed that additional money allocated from the Department of Communities should go straight to the community support hubs to assist with food and fuel.

Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Councillor Duffy said: “I am delighted that Council has been able to convene a special council meeting on this issue, following my proposal last week at the Health and Communities Committee.

“I have been approached by a number of the community support hubs which are assisting very vulnerable residents as they cope with the pressures of Covid 19 and they are quickly running out of resources.

“It is welcome that the Department for Communities has been able to provide funding to allow communities to carry out this vital role, but Council must also step up now to make these decisions as urgently as possible to allow us to facilitate these much needed financial packages hitting the ground.

“It is our duty as elected representatives to do everything in our power to assist people through these difficult times.”
