1916 flower beds request in Dungiven

Sinn Fein councillor Tony McCaul made the request at an environmental services committee meeting at Causeway Coast and Glens Council on Tuesday.

Colr. McCaul said a local 1916 Commemoration Group that had been established wanted to plant flowers on four beds at the top of Chapel Road, on the Glenshane end of the town. He said they wanted to plant flowers in each of the four beds spelling out 1916, one digit in each bed.

Colr. McCaul said there would be no cost to Causeway Council as the group will cover the cost. He also said the group will plant the flowers and remove them after Easter.

After some discussion, and a request from DUP Councillor George Duddy for a design of what the beds would look like, the matter was deferred to a full meeting of council later this month. Colr. Duddy also expressed concern about setting a precedent.

Colr. McCaul said should the group be denied the request when it is brought to Council later this month he would be disappointed.

SDLP Colr. Gerry Mullan said in a year of centenary commemorations people should be magnanimous.
