Mr McCartney said that the exemption came about as a result of the protections secured in the Fresh Start Agreement.

He said: “In recent days households may have received letters outlining a number of changes to the welfare system, including the so-called bedroom tax.

“The Fresh Start Agreement secured full mitigation for the so-called bedroom tax for all Housing Executive and housing association tenants.

“Those protections are unique to the North and will help thousands of people across our communities.”
