Altnagelvin Hospital extension gets green light

Planning permission has been granted for an extension at Altnagelvin Hospital.

Members of the Planning Committee of Derry City and Strabane District Council unanimously endorsed full planning permission for the further redevelopment of Altnagelvin Area Hospital at January’s committee meeting in the Guildhall.

The full application has now been issued by the Planning Officers to the applicants.

The proposal is for the construction of six wards consisting of 144 single bedrooms over three storeys with associated support facilities. The proposal is to allow for the relocation of inpatient beds from the existing tower block and also includes a new main entrance and improved vehicular and pedestrian access.

Chief Executive of Derry City and Strabane District Council John Kelpie emphasised the importance of decisions such as this now being made at a local level

“With the granting of this planning approval for Altnagelvin, Derry City and Strabane District Council in its role as the new local planning authority is playing its part in the delivery of this high quality health facility which will serve the needs of the people of the City and District in line with the key objectives of the developing Community Plan.”
