Anti-social activities under Flyover - Logue

Councillor Logue said: “Over the last number of weekends large groups of up to 100 young people have been gathering in the vicinity of the Lecky Road Flyover and Charlotte Street between the Long Tower Chapel.

“Local residents have raised their concerns over a number of anti-social activities including the playing of loud music; underage drinking; throwing bottles onto the roadway and throwing eggs at passing cars and residents,” she said.

“Not all of the young people are involved in these activities, but residents and Mass goers are having to walk through these large crowds of teenagers which can be very intimidating for some,” added Colr. Logue.

The Sinn Fein councillor also claimed that there were “serious child protection concerns” given that some of the young people involved are aged as young as 12 and 13 years old.

“Residents have told me that on Saturday last these youngsters started gathering from as early at 4.00 p.m. and continued to gather right through to the late hours.

“I would appeal to parents in the area to be aware of where their children are at the weekend,” he said.

“I have been in contact with the Triax Community Safety Forum to see what measures can be put in place this weekend to help alleviate the situation.

“Over recent years a lot of work has gone in the area to address many of the issues in and around the under pass .

“Trees and bushes have been removed and cut back; new lights have also been installed and graffiti cleaned up.

“The local Triax community team also have done an immense amount of work with community improvement schemes,” she concluded.
