Barry Street back lane '˜disgusting'

The woman, who did not want to be named, said she almost stepped on a used nappy when leaving her bin out for collection last week.

“This just can’t go on like this - it’s disgusting,” said the woman.

“I was in the lane last week when I almost stood on a used nappy. I’ve tried speaking to some of the other residents but nothing ever gets done. If the dumping problem persists, I will have to think about moving - if not for me, for my children.”

SDLP councillor Shauna Cusack said she was “sickened” at those responsible for the dumping but praised Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) for intervening to help the local residents.

“I am sick of and sickened by those who continue to use streets in our city as their own personal dumping ground. Last month we were focused on Rosemount and now it’s Meadowbank and Barry Street off the Strand Road. The people dumping their household waste and bulky goods clearly have no regard for residents living in the area.”

Colr. Cusack added: “This is a daily challenge for local people. No one should have to live like this. Not only is it a haven for vermin but depressing for a community to have to suffer.

“Someone must see this happening and I would appeal for residents to report any suspicious activity so that the culprits can be heavily fined. How many times do people need to be told that your rubbish is your responsibility?

“I would like to thank DCSDC for cleaning the area up last week. They also delivered leaflets to all households. Hopefully those responsible will get the message,” said Colr. Cusack.
