Bishop Edward Daly: Humes' sadness at death of '˜dear friend'

Nobel Peace Laureate John Hume, and his wife Pat have expressed 'great sadness' at the death of their 'dear friend', Bishop Edward Daly.

The retired Bishop of Derry passed away at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry this morning. He was aged 82 and had been in ill health for some time. He was surrounded by members of his immediate family.

In a statement, John and Pat Hume said: “It is with deep regret and great sadness that we have heard the news of the death of our dear friend, Bishop Edward Daly.

“Always a beacon of light, and with a warm and reassuring presence, he was a great source of strength to us in difficult times as he has been to countless others.

“Bishop Daly came from a place of enormous spiritual depth and generosity. He was able to combine great gentleness with immense strength.

He listened deeply to others and his counsel was always based on love.

“Above all he was kind.

“Our sincere condolences to the Daly family and Bishop Daly’s wider church family.”
