A Limavady councillor is calling for the speed limit on one of the town's busiest roads to be reduced from 40mph to 30mph.

The SDLP’s Gerry Mullan believes a new restriction must be introduced from the Edenmore Road roundabout to the Broad Road junction because of increased traffic and associated congestion.

Colr. Mullan also believes a number of additional road safety measures are needed.

“Already a number of minor road traffic collisions have occurred and I believe that if this junction is not regulated, even at this stage, there is likely to be a serious accident,” said Colr. Mullan.

With a new housing development at the bottom end of the Edenmore Road, situated beside a busy retail complex which includes a filling station and a children’s activity centre, Colr. Mullan said the situation is guaranteed to deteriorate.

“I have had a number of residents contact me from various housing estates in this area about the speed of traffic along this road, especially now that it has become so busy,” he said.

Colr. Mullan added: “The potential for a serious accident involving children along this road is very serious and concerning. I believe that the need for a pedestrian crossing is vital, along with the reduced speed limit to avoid the risk of accidents.”

Colr. Mullan said he has requested a site meeting with Transport NI officials to discuss the matter.
