Tommy Mullan from Galliagh Residents’ Association was speaking in answer to claims from other quarters that hundreds upon hundreds of jobs have been created in Derry over the last few years.

Mr Mullan said: “I would like to know where the jobs are, and how many jobs have been taken out of Derry. Look at Stream and then there’s B&Q and there should have been major businesses locating there along the Buncrana Road sites.

“The lack of jobs is a failure by all the politicians, and sites lying empty - is that what politicians wanted?

“There has been sweet nothing done for this city in the past five years and all the politicians from Derry have let Derry down.”

Mr Mullan claimed that people on benefits were being “forced to sit at a computer and search for a job and told to find themselves a job, even if that might be a job in Dungiven.”

Mr Mullan further claimed that trade unions needed to do more to fight for rights and jobs for people.
