Council co-operating over alleged Foyle Arena theft

Thousands of pounds is alleged to have been stolen from Foyle Arena over a weekend last month.

The ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ event was staged in aid of four local charities.

The alleged theft of the four-figure sum was discussed at Thursday’s meeting of the Council’s Assurance, Risk and Risk Committee, which was held in the Guildhall.

In a report brought before the committee, it was stated: “Members may be aware from recent Press coverage that an allegation has been made stating that money was taken from one of our leisure centres following an event organised by a third party.

“Members are advised that the event was organised by a third party, who had hired the Council facility. The income from the event was not Council’s income and was not receipted or secured by Council’s systems or staff.

“The PSNI were contacted immediately when staff were advised of the incident. Council staff have fully co-operated with the PSNI and provided them with all of the information they require at this stage.

“The PSNI are carrying out an investigation in relation to this incident and Council will continue to co-operate with them in their investigation.”

In response to queries from Independent Councillor Derek Hussey, a Council officer elaborated that the Council had taken measures to ensure the relevant information was gathered.

A spokesman for the police meanwhile, confirmed: “Enquiries into this investigation remain ongoing at this time.”

The event was held to raise funds for Macmillan, the Pink Ladies, Fountain Dance Association and Foyle Search and Rescue. Speaking after the incident came to light, a spokesperson for the four charities thanked the public for their support, adding: “We are sorry that this has taken place and that we find ourselves in these circumstances. ”
