Delargy praises McGreanery family’s dignified pursuit of justice

Sinn Féin MLA Pádraig Delargy has said he will continue to stand with the family of Billy McGreanery, who was shot dead by the British army in 1971.

He was speaking after the PPS confirmed it would not prosecute a soldier who was a suspect in the case.

“I want to pay tribute to the dignified and courageous campaign the McGreanery family has led for more than five decades,” said Mr Delargy.

“This decision will no doubt be difficult to accept after such a long period spent fighting for truth and justice for Billy.

“But I know the family’s efforts have been a huge inspiration to others fighting for accountability for their loved ones' deaths, and they are to be commended for that.

"Sadly, this represents yet another case where the British army has acted with total impunity in the north.

“In whatever steps they take next, I and Sinn Féin will continue to stand with the family of Billy McGreanery.”
