Man before Derry court in connection with Class A drugs find

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court charged in connection with a find of class A drugs that police valued at £1600.

James Kelly (25) with an address at Spencer Road in Derry appeared on Wednesday charged with possessing class A and B drugs on April 28 and also possessing class A drugs on the same date with intent to supply.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.

The court heard that at around 5pm police observed a vehicle in Springtown Industrial Estate and observed a cannabis grinder in the vehicle.

A subsequent search uncovered 16 deal bags of class A drugs which police valued at £1;600.

The court heard that Kelly refused to give his PIN number.

The officer said that police also obtained the defendant's Credit Union book and noticed there had been large amounts of cash going in and out of the account including a withdrawal of £900 on April 24.

Bail was opposed as the police claimed that there was a clear risk of reoffending as the defendant was a self confessed cocaine addict.

There was also a concern that the defendant could flee the jurisdiction, the court was told.

Defence counsel Sean Doherty said there were concerns for Kelly's safety and added he had no record.

The barrister said he would dispute the valuation put on the class A drugs.

He asked for bail to allow the defendant to return to the family home.

Bail was granted and Kelly will appear again on May 27.
