Man sentenced for threatening and abusive behaviour towards ex

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court for sentencing after admitting threatening and abusive behaviour towards his former partner.

Gavin Campbell (39) of Rosses Gate in Derry was charged in relation to an incident which occurred on May 26 this year, when police were called by Campbell's former partner to report that he had been sending threatening messages.

Defence Barrister Michael Donaghy said that the offence 'undoubtedly crossed the criminal threshold' and noted that Campbell has a 'significant' criminal record, but no previous domestic offences.

He said that Campbell had been in a 14 year relationship with the injured party and that the incident in question occurred on one day when he had 'a meltdown'.

He also said that Campbell had no breaches of his bail in relation to this case and had 'held his hands up'.

He was sentenced to five months in custody, suspended for three years, and a restraining order was imposed for five years.
