Police probing whether reported assault on teen was sectarian-motivated hate crime

Police in Derry have confirmed they are investigating whether or not a reported assault on a teenager last Thursday was a sectarian-motivated hate crime.

A witnesses appeal has been launched following the reported assault in the Nelson Drive area.

It was reported that at around 7pm, a teenager was approached by a Black Volkswagen Golf. Two males exited and allegedly assaulted the teenager, who sustained injuries to his face. The two suspects made off from the scene.

Enquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances of what happened, who was involved, and a motive, including whether or not this was a sectarian-motivated attack, the PSNI said.
