Suspended jail term for Derry women who assaulted housemate in street brawl

A woman has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrates’ Court for disorderly behaviour and assaulting another woman after an argument ‘spilled out into the street’.

Caitlin Callaghan (28) of Abercorn Road in Derry admitted the offences that occurred on October 29.

Derry Magistrates’ Court was told that police officers were alerted to two females fighting in the Abercorn Road area of the city.

A check of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) showed that the defendant was the aggressor and that she had punched, kicked and thrown the other woman to the ground during the incident, the court heard on Thursday morning.

Defence solicitor Keith Kyle told the court that the two women shared accommodation and that Callaghan had felt she was 'not appreciated'.

An argument had subsequently ensued that spilled out into the street, Mr. Kyle stated.

Callaghan was sentenced to one month in prison suspended for 12 months and a conditional discharge.
