Police have confirmed they are investigating an incident of assault in Strabane amid widespread shock and anger over an attack on a child.

A PSNI spokesperson said they are “investigating a report of an assault in the Canal Basin area of Strabane on Friday, July 17”.

"A suspect has been identified, and is assisting police with enquiries.

"At this time, as the investigation continues, it would be inappropriate to make any further comment,” a PSNI spokesperson said.

Politicians in the Tyrone town have spoken of the widespread sense of shock at what happened, and how the community has rallied to support the victim.

"The Strabane people are nothing short of amazing when it comes to pulling together,” Sinn Féin Councillor Paul Boggs has said.

Independent Councillor Raymond Barr meanwhile said: “The senseless attack on a young girl in the Canal Basin is horrific and disturbing".

West Tyrone SDLP MLA Daniel McCrossan said he too was “deeply shocked and appalled by the assault” on the child at the Canal Basin.

"My thoughts are first and foremost with the victim and her family. What happened was utterly disgraceful and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”

He also thank the people of Strabane “who stepped forward to support” the child in the immediate aftermath.

"The kindness, compassion and concern shown by members of our community reflects the very best of our town, and I know it will have meant a great deal at such a frightening time.

"Every child and young person deserves to feel safe in their own community.”
