"We are extremely lucky no-one was injured as a result of this incident which occurred in a residential area," said Inspector Spence.

A police helicopter was deployed to support officers on the ground responding to the incident.

The Chair of the Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership, Councillor Sandra Duffy, condemned last night’s shooting.

Speaking after the incident, Colr. Duffy stated: "Attacks like these are not acceptable in our society and must be condemned by all of us. The people of this city are shocked and disgusted at these continued attacks.

“Shooting indiscriminately into a house at 9 p.m. in a built up residential area is a despicable act. There is absolutely no justification for these shootings. It is clear that the criminal gangs responsible for these attacks have absolutely no concern for people living here.

“Their only aim is to try to exert some sort of coercive control over these areas. My thoughts are with the people living in the area who have witnessed another terrible attack. I would urge anyone with information on this shooting to contact the PSNI or Crimestoppers immediately.”

Sinn Féin Councillor for Foyleside Mickey Cooper condemned the incident in MacNeice Court.

He said he was thankful no one was in the property at the time.

"It appears several masked men arrived at the property this evening and tried to force their way in.

"They then proceeded to break a number of windows. It's also reported that several shots were fired .

"Thankfully the tenant who has only recently moved into the area was not at home. Those responsible have nothing to offer the local community and should get off the backs of the people of Ballymagroarty.

"The local community is in the process of organising a series of events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the estate and this incident stands in stark contrast to the positive work that has been taking place," said Colr. Cooper.
